Etcheberry resigns amid scrutiny

Bnamericas
Chile's public works and transport minister Javier Etcheberry has resigned, government spokesperson Francisco Vidal announced. Jaime Estévez, president of Chile's only state-run bank BancoEstado, will assume the role as minister on January 3. Although a reason for Etcheberry's stepping down was not made public, the minister has been under scrutiny in recent weeks over the collapse of the Loncomilla bridge in the south of the country, which allegedly occurred due to contractor and ministry negligence.
