Eutelsat to boost Olympic coverage with new satellite

Bnamericas

French satellite provider Eutelsat expects to bolster coverage of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August with the launch of a tri-band satellite scheduled to be launched on March 9.

In a press release, Eutelsat said that the Eutelsat 65 West A satellite arrived in Kourou, French Guiana on February 6 and is due for liftoff aboard an Ariane rocket.

The Ku-band satellite is designed to enable DTH reception of digital and HD channels across Brazil with 60cm antennas and facilitate corporate connectivity in Central America, the Caribbean and the Andean region.

Eutelsat 65 West A also features a transatlantic C-band coverage for cross-continental video contribution and distribution and a multi-spotbeam Ka-band payload that will promote broadband access across Latin America, notably Brazil.

The satellite will strengthen Eutelsat's coverage of the Americas, which was bolstered in 2015 by the launch of Eutelsat 115 West B and will be further consolidated later this year by Eutelsat 117 West B.

Eutelsat is also expanding coverage through Mexican satellite company Satmex, which it acquired on January 2, 2014 for US$831mn, in addition to Satmex's US$311mn debt.
