Exploration planned for redrawn Suriname offshore acreage

Suriname’s national oil company Staatsolie is planning exploration on offshore acreage formerly held by Tullow Oil.

The work entails acquiring 3D seismic on block 54 in the Demerara plateau which is 150-300km north of the country’s coast and encompasses current blocks 63, 65 and 66, according to a document filed by the NOC with the National Institute for Environment and Development (NIMOS).

The six-month project will update a 3D seismic campaign carried out by Tullow in 2015.

“In the latter half of 2023, Staatsolie will engage a seismic contractor to gather subsurface structure information for delineating potential hydrocarbon leads, in preparation for possible future exploration drilling campaigns,” the document says.

In a related development, the government reported that the presidential gas exploitation steering committee (pictured) issued an interim report to President Chandrikapersad Santokhi (in photo).

“According to expectations, Suriname will be able to earn the first US dollars within a few years, depending on technical feasibility,” the Office of the President said in a release.
