Falcondo reaches agreement with union to end mine stoppage

Falconbridge Dominicana (Falcondo) reached an agreement with a union to end a suspension of its Dominican Republic ferronickel operations.

The deal – signed on Saturday with officials from the united Falcondo workers union (SUTRAFADO) – saw operations restart the same day at the Falcondo mine, following a suspension lasting several days.

The agreement was reached following talks tabled by the Dominican labor ministry, Falcondo said in a release.

The company, a subsidiary of Americano Nickel, said the negotiations had prioritized job security and the wellbeing of families and the region.

Falcondo previously withdrew a permit application to extend mining into the Loma Miranda forest following a public outcry over potential environmental impacts.
