Fiber optic cable network, spanning 560km, nears completion

Bnamericas
The Guyanese government's 560km fiber optic cable network, extending from Lethem on the Brazilian border to the coastal capital Georgetown, is 90% complete and will be ready for testing in early August, local paper Kaieteur News reported. The network - part of the government's plan to improve internet access in Guyana - is expected to complement the One Laptop Per Family project, in which the state is looking to provide free internet access to all communities across the country. The network was installed in six blocks through Letham, Annai, Kurupukari, Mabura, Wisroc, Providence and ending in Georgetown. Chinese firm Huawei, Brazilian telco Oi and local company E-Networks carried out the design. The project came shortly after mobile operator GT&T installed a US$60M fiber optic cable between Guyana and Suriname.
