Finnish firm opens screening media plant in Mexico

Finland-based aggregates company Metso cut the ribbon on a screening media plant in Guanajuato, Mexico this month, to “significantly increase its supply and delivery capabilities for mining and aggregates customers in North and Central America,” the company said in a release.

The 9,000m² screening media center has 46 employees and uses advanced and sustainable manufacturing practices, the firm added. The factory’s installed solar panels will supply around 50% of its electricity requirements. 

Metso chose Irapuato in the central Mexico state of Guanajuato as the location for its new factory to align with its growth strategy, improve lead times and offer “scalability in production volumes in a very important region,” said Jouni Mähönen, VP of the screening business line. 

Over the past year, Metso has observed substantial growth in its screening installed base in the Americas, delivering 250 new screening machines to mining and aggregates customers. The company employs around 730 workers in production, sales, and field service in Mexico.

This facility in Irapuato is part of Metso's broader industrial presence in the region, as it also operates a rubber and Poly-Met media factory in the same industrial area.  

Looking ahead, the company plans to complete construction of a new polymer filter plate plant in 2024, with operations due to commence in early 2025.
