First section of dual carriageway on route n° 9 will optimize transportation and boost tourism between Maldonado and Rocha

Falero was accompanied at the event by his counterpart from the Interior, Nicolás Martinelli; the national director of Roads, Hernán Ciganda, and the mayors of Rocha, Nicolás García, and Maldonado, Enrique Antía, among other national and departmental authorities.

Falero indicated that the road works inaugurated are part of “a stage of a major project of more than 100 kilometers to reach Rocha by double track.” For the next summer season, it is planned to open 80 kilometers of double track, which will allow for increased road safety, develop tourism and solve the transport overload, he announced. The official said that the Government has a strong social sensitivity and highlighted the investment of more than 800 million dollars made in Maldonado and Rocha.

The Secretary of State also highlighted the incorporation of construction, rehabilitation, maintenance and financing contracts (Cremaf), which allowed the first tender to be carried out during this period.

The rehabilitation works on Route No. 9 cover approximately 17 kilometers, between the bridge over the Garzón stream, the border between the departments of Maldonado and Rocha, and the junction with the Garzón Sainz Martínez road, in the department of Fernandino.

They involved an investment of 25,700,000 dollars and included the duplication of the roadway, the construction of a roundabout at the entrance to Garzón and two return roads. In addition, two bus stops with shelters were installed and new bridges were built over the Anastasio stream and the Silva and La Cruz ravines.

The works presented are part of a major project to restore 104 kilometers of the aforementioned highway, from kilometer 105.65 to kilometer 210, between the city of Pan de Azúcar, in Maldonado, and the entrance to the department of Rocha. After a total investment of 157,982,948 dollars, the road will be doubled, and 30 bridges, 10 roundabouts and eight return lanes will be built.
