Four companies interested in expanding Honduras airport

Honduran authorities are moving forward with plans to expand Roatán international airport, which serves the Bay Islands area off the northern coast.

On November 24, national airport service SAN issued a public letter inviting companies to take part in the project to expand the airport, with offers due to be delivered by January 12 at the latest. However, it is unclear whether the deadline was extended as no tender appears on procurement website Honducompras.

The mayor of Roatán, Ronnie McNab, said at the weekend that the bidding process is beginning, with four companies participating, although he did not mention any names.

"We're ready for the bidding phase that is now starting and companies can begin to participate in the construction ... and the total remodeling of the existing airport, one domestic and one international terminal, the expansion of the runway for aircraft and vehicle parking area and resurfacing of the runway," the mayor was quoted as saying by outlet Proceso.

McNab said that US$18mn will be invested in the works, with the municipality providing counterpart funding if necessary.

The expansion project is designed to help increase tourism to what is already the most popular destination in Honduras.
