French-Colombian consortium to operate Quito metro
A consortium formed by Colombian state-owned subway company Metro de Medellín and French firm Transdev has won the contract to operate the first line of the US$2bn metro system in Ecuador's capital Quito.
The contract is for six years and includes commercial operation of the system and complementary services such as cleaning and security, Quito mayor Santiago Guarderas said during the broadcast announcement of the decision for the tender that was launched in March.
Signing of the contract is scheduled to take place in late August, while commercial operations of the line should begin in December.
“This is a very important project for the 3mn inhabitants of the Quito metropolitan district. In less than six months we will have the subway running," said Guarderas.
The Infrastructure Transparency Initiative (CoST), based in the United Kingdom, monitored the process as an international observer.
The metro line, which has already been completed, is 23km long and has 15 stations. The infrastructure work was financed 50% with State resources and 50% by Quito city hall.
