French Guiana solar-hydrogen project back on track

Work recently resumed at Hydrogène de France’s (HDF Energy) CEOG multi-megawatt hydrogen power plant in French Guiana.

In an update, HDF said that demonstrations held up the project for several months and that construction began again in August.

Although the company did not elaborate on the impasse, the fatal police shooting of an unarmed youth of Algerian descent in July sparked violent protests across France and its territories, including French Guiana.

The 10MW plant will boast a photovoltaic park and a hydrogen-based energy storage system, together with a battery for short-term energy storage.

Groundbreaking took place in 2021 and commissioning is scheduled for next year.

The company added that talks are underway regarding the transfer of fuel cell ownership to Siemens Energy this year or 2024.
