Gas forecast to account for over half of Dominican Rep’s power output in 2028

Natural gas power plants are expected to account for 53% of electricity generation in the Dominican Republic in 2028.
The outlook is part of power grid coordinator OC’s preliminary 2025-28 operating report which projects that the energy source will represent 41.5% next year.
According to the report, nearly 2,000MW of gas-fired capacity will be added in the period: Energas 4 (130MW, March 2025), Manzanillo Power Land (432MW, June 2025), Estrella del Mar 4 (150MW, December 2026), Manzanillo Bloque 1 (420MW, August 2027), San Felipe Andrés (467MW, December 2027) and Manzanillo Bloque 2 (392MW, April 2028).
In 2028, gas would be followed by coal (25.4%), solar (11%), wind (5%), hydro (4%), fuel oil (0.9%) and biomass (0.7%), and in 2025, coal (29.7%), fuel oil (11.2%), solar (8.2%), hydro (4.7%), wind (4%) and biomass (0.8%).
On the demand front, the forecast is that consumption will increase 7.96% next year and 5.39% on average in 2026-28.
OC’s report, which includes cost metrics, companies and energy storage, is available in the Documents box in the top-right corner of the screen.
