Geothermal project secures Central America grid nod

Central American power interconnection commission CRIE has authorized a geothermal project in Nicaragua to access the regional transmission network (RTR).

The approval is for Polaris Energy Nicaragua’s (Pensa) US$25mn, 10MW binary unit expansion at the 72MW San Jacinto plant (pictured) in León department.

The green light followed fulfillment of technical and environmental requirements, and the lack of objection from Siepac grid operator EOR, Nicaragua's energy regulator INE and the country’s state power transmission company Enatrel.

Pensa, a subsidiary of Toronto-based Polaris Renewable Energy, filed the connection request in May. The additional capacity is due online next quarter.

Project equipment was procured from Ormat Systems, and Steam Group is the owner engineer during construction and commissioning.

CRIE also approved an RTR connection request submitted by Costa Rica’s state power company ICE in March for an expansion at the Moín substation in Limón province.
