Google to lay Rio-Santos subsea fiber cable
Google will lay a 390km fiber optic cable to link Praia da Macumba in Rio de Janeiro to the Santos region, on the coast of São Paulo state, the company said in a blog post.
To carry out the project, Google has hired Brazilian fiber optic systems manufacturer Padtec, which will deploy and manage the cable.
The structure, called "Junior" after Brazilian painter and designer José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior, will be comprised of eight fiber pairs and will be activated using Padtec's submarine optical line amplifiers, developed and manufactured in Brazil, Padtec said in a release.
The price tag of the infrastructure was not disclosed.
The system will intersect two other cable projects in the region in which Google is involved as an investor: Monet, a 10,000km cable that will stretch from Florida to Fortaleza and Santos in Brazil; and Tannat, which will run 2,000km from Santos to Maldonado, Uruguay.
Monet's backers include Angola Cables, Uruguay's state-run telco Antel and Brazilian private carrier Algar Telecom. Antel is also a partner for the Tannat cable.
"Even in times of economic crisis, demand in Brazil for fast and reliable digital solutions continues to grow. Together, these three cables will help meet this demand by expanding the digital infrastructure in South America, making the transmission of data more efficient, fast and reliable," read the post signed by Cristiano Ramos, Google's general manager for partnerships on internet infrastructure in Latin America.
The Rio-Santos cable is scheduled to be activated in the second half of 2017.
