Govt awards maintenance contract for Panama Canal bridge

Panama’s government awarded a contract to carry out maintenance works on the Centenario bridge (pictured), the second one built over the Panama Canal, local press reported.
The winner was the Rehabilitación Puente Centenario CAA consortium, comprising local company Centroequipos, Lebanon’s ARD Engineering and ATP Electronics, news outlet Panamá América said. The bid presented by the consortium was US$6.2mn.
The tender reportedly had only two participants, the other being Doloopo Panama Corp, which failed to submit its 2020 financial statements required by the tender rules.
The public works ministry (MOP) took more than a month to award the contract which, according to Panamá América, was due to the complexity of the tender.
Both groups also participated in a tender to carry out maintenance on the Las Américas bridge – the first one over the canal that was built nearly six decades ago and connects Panama City with the west of the country. The bridge requires major and costly repairs, according to broadcaster TVN-2.
According to local media, the first tender for that contract was declared void in early January after failing to attract bidders. The second tender was launched on January 21 but the results have still not been published.
