Govt awards regional landfill contracts

Guayana's Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has awarded landfill management contracts in eight of the country's 10 regions, as part of a regional landfill proposal. According to a government press release, Concept Services has been awarded a 15 year management contract a landfill in Region One and a 10-year contract in Region Six and Eight. Puran Bros Disposal has also been awarded a 15-year contract for landfills in Region Two and Three and a 10-year contract in Region Six. Advanced Environmental Solutions has been awarded 10-year contracts in Region Five and Six. Cevons Waste has been awarded 10-year contract in Region Five as well as a 15-year contract in Region Seven. Atlas General Contractors has been awarded a five-year contract to manage a landfill in Region Nine. Each contract entailed a recycling component, and two of the companies expressed interest in setting up gas management facilities. Another expressed interest in creating a hazardous waste company, minster Ganga Persaud said. The regional landfill initiative is part of the ministry's attempt to cope with excessive waste disposal at the Haags Bosch facility and the country's numerous illegal dumping sites.
