Govt, ICE discuss cross-border power supplies
Bnamericas Published: Wednesday, November 03, 2004
Panama's government has started negotiations with Costa Rica's state power company ICE for the latter to supply power to Panama's Bocas del Toro province. The province is not interconnected to the rest of Panama, and the international interconnection would be a quicker solution to a domestic interconnection, Panama's presidential news agency reported President Martín Torrijos as saying. Because the province is not interconnected, power rates are higher than in the rest of the country. In an attempt to keep prices down, the government will continue to subsidize residential clients in Bocas del Toro, and will grant a further generation license in order to take advantage of the area's hydroelectric potential, Torrijos said. "There won't be electricity tariff increases until the end of January when we will propose a long-term solution," he was quoted as saying.
