Govt. official: No port concession plans for now

Chile's state companies administrator SEP (Sistema de Empresas) does not presently have plans to offer more of the country's ports in concession, SEP president Carlos Mladinic told BNamericas. "We are like the landlords, the port authority. We concession out ports to be operated, but we don't have plans to do that in the near future," he said. "Chile's port law determines that at any moment, private business interests can solicit the concession [of a port], and we have 60 days to respond to that request. We don't have any pending requests at this time," Mladinic added. SEP manages 10 ports throughout Chile. Of those, the ports of Puerto Montt, Coquimbo, Chacabuco and Punta Arenas are 100% operated by SEP. The rest are wholly or partially operated by concessionaires and handle over 18Mt/y of cargo, representing 70% of Chile's port transactions.
