Govt outlines road, bridge works under 2010 budget plan

Guyana will start investing G$537mn (US$2.6mn) in road rehabilitation and maintenance in the country's 10 administrative regions, government information service GINA said on its website. A total of G$11mn will be spent to build bridges at Yarrow Creek and Hosororo-Kumaka road in Barima-Waini region. An additional G$35mn will used to repair road surfaces in the region. In Pomeroon-Supenaam region, G$11mn will be invested to construct bridges and G$40mn in road maintenance in areas such as Charity, Suddie, Capoey, La Union and New Road. The government will invest G$18mn to build bridges in Essequibo Islands-West Demerara region. Another G$45mn will upgrade roads in areas such as Leguan, Wakenaam, Zeeburg, Bagotville and Stewartville. Over G$18mn will be invested in bridge repairs and G$33mn to rehabilitate roads in Demerara-Mahaica region, while G$57.5mn will be used to repair roads in Mahaica-Berbice region. East Berbice-Corentyne region will have a G$27mn budget to build and rehabilitate bridges. Another G$56mn will be used for maintenance on roads in areas such as Goed Bananen Land, Palmyra, Fryish, Bloomfield, Limlair, Liverpool, Letter Kenny and Whim. Cuyuni-Mazaruni region will invest G$8mn to construct bridges, while G$17mn will be used to rehabilitate roads and drainage systems in Bartica and Kako areas. The government will spend G$16mn in Potaro-Siparuni region on bridge construction and G$23mn to rehabilitate roads. In Upper Essequibo-Upper Takutu region, G$26mn will be used to build bridges at Warapau, Kassawau and Karasabai, and an additional G$50mn will be used to improve roads. Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice region will benefit from a G$37mn budget for road rehabilitation, while another G$8mn will be invested in the construction of a concrete culvert and bridge at Rainbow city. All these works are part of the government's G$7.6bn (US$36.8mn) 2010 budget to improve the country's road and bridge network. Of the total, G$5.2bn will be allocated to roads and G$2.4bn to bridges.
