Govt. ratifies creation of state telco

Venezuela's communication and information minister Andrés Izarra has ratified a law allowing the creation of Corporación Venezolana de Telecomunicaciones, the new state telecommunication company, local press quoted him as saying. The project is co-financed by Corporación Venezolana de Guyana (CVG) and Electricidad del Caroní (Edelca), and will start operations in the near future, competing with local giant Cantv. The new company will offer residential telephony services and internet access. However, plans to enter the mobile sector are still under negotiation.
