Green hydrogen pilot to be tendered by Mexico's Matamoros
Matamoros city in Mexico's Tamaulipas state will put out to tender a 20ha plot of land for the development of a green hydrogen pilot project.
The local government approved the project last week but reduced the size from 30ha and established a concession period of 25 years, according to local outlet Reporteros en la Red. It will now have to go through the Tamaulipas state congress.
The project will repurpose wastewater that is currently being dumped into the Palangana lagoon and the Gulf of Mexico, daily Expreso reported Matamoros mayor Mario López as saying.
The tender will be open to international bidders but local authorities already have a favorite in Belgium’s ISCM Foundation, the mayor has said.
"We don't believe there is another company like this foundation, which makes it likely it will place the winning bid in this international tender," López said. "This is not a company searching for credit but is practically a donor."
If successful, the Matamoros project could be replicated in seven other municipalities and always tied to wastewater management.
The project will join a growing pipeline of green hydrogen facilities in Mexico including those by Hy2gen in Campeche, Tarafert in Durango, Dhamma Energy in Guanajuato and HDF in Baja California.
