Grid nod for El Salvador geothermal plant upgrade
El Salvador geothermal operator LaGeo has secured authorization to connect an increase at its 110MW Berlín plant to Central America’s transmission network (RTR).
The project, dubbed Unidad Ciclo Binario 2, includes the installation of a binary cycle unit which will add 6MW and a 1.3km, 115kW line within the Berlín field.
In its approval, power interconnection commission CRIE highlighted analysis from EOR, which operates the region’s Siepac grid, that the boost “will not cause voltages or overloads outside the established ranges in normal operation and in the event of a contingency in nodes of the RTR.”
The plant is in the municipality of Alegría, Usulután department.
LaGeo, a unit of state power company CEL, also manages the 95MW Ahuachapán plant and is developing the Chinameca (20MW) and San Vicente (10MW) projects.
The subsidiary recently signed a geothermal promotion agreement with Japan’s Tohoku University.
Geothermal power accounts for around 9% of the country's installed generation capacity.
