Medellin, Thursday June 15, 2023 (@epmestamosahi) | The EPM Board of Directors authorized the creation of a subsidiary company, with headquarters in Panama, with the objective of promoting the growth of renewable energies of the EPM Group in America, within the commitment of the Organization to lead the energy transformation in the region and respond to the demand for clean and competitive energy from the community.
The announcement was made this Thursday, June 15, by Jorge Andrés Carrillo Cardoso, general manager of EPM, during his conference entitled "EPM renewing the future", at the XXV Congress of the National Association of Public Services and Communications Companies (Andesco), that takes place in Cartagena. “Our subsidiary will seek to develop new value-added businesses and the opportunities offered by clean energy. These energies have a fundamental role in the decarbonization of the economy and that is a contribution of the Company for sustainability”, said the general manager of EPM.
The goal of Grupo EPM is to reach an installed capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) in multiple geographies by 2030, with an initial focus on Central America, with special emphasis on Panama, El Salvador and Guatemala, in addition to Colombia.
Jorge Andrés Carrillo Cardoso, general manager of EPM, highlighted that "Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala and Colombia present great potential for the development of renewable energy projects, in which our business group aspires to be the leader in energy transformation."
For this reason, the creation of this subsidiary seeks to establish a strategic association with an expert partner that provides knowledge and capital, with the aim of growing and developing the renewable energy business for Grupo EPM.
Pioneers in clean energy
EPM is a pioneer in clean technologies in Colombia. The Company built and put into operation Jepírachi, the first wind farm in the country, in April 2004, in the department of La Guajira.
The construction of the Jepírachi Park has allowed the Organization to acquire specialized knowledge in the development and operation of renewable energy projects, making it an expert operator with 67 years of experience in the energy sector in Colombia.
Grupo EPM is the largest operator of the Colombian electricity system, with an installed capacity of more than 4,000 megawatts (MW). In addition, it has the energy distributors ENSA (Panama), Del SUR (El Salvador) and EEGSA (Guatemala), which have consolidated the presence of the Conglomerate in Central America with a reliable and quality service for millions of users.
The new subsidiary will allow Grupo EPM to strengthen leadership in renewable energy in America, thus contributing to the consolidation of its strategy towards energy transition, climate change mitigation, environmental care, territorial development, transformation of lives and the welfare of the community.
