Guatemala continues crackdown on anti-mining protests
Guatemala is continuing a crackdown on anti-mining protests in El Estor, Izabal department.
President Alejandro Giammattei imposed a 15-day ‘state of prevention’ in the municipality, which provides powers to quell unauthorized demonstrations and gatherings.
The move follows a tougher 30-day state of siege in the municipality, which also restricts free movement.
Some members of local Q’eqchi’ indigenous communities have been protesting to prevent a restart of operations at Solway Investment Group’s Fenix nickel mine in El Estor.
The mine has been suspended pending a court-ordered consultation with indigenous communities needed to restore its operating license.
The process entered the formal consultation stage earlier in November.
Pan American Silver’s Escobal silver-lead-zinc mine in Guatemala's Santa Rosa department is also suspended while a consultation with indigenous communities is conducted by the energy and mines ministry (MEM).
