Guatemala looking to spend over US$2.3bn on infra in 2025

The Guatemalan government requested that congress approve a 2025 budget proposal that includes more than 29.6bn quetzales (US$2.3bn) for infrastructure projects.

The full spending proposal made by President Bernardo Arévalo’s administration amounts to 149bn quetzales, and the suggested budget for infrastructure is reportedly 45.9% more that approved for 2024, according to a report published by Agencia Guatemalteca de Noticias.

Arévalo said that this budget was estimated considering road infrastructure, water and energy projects, as well as the first metro line in capital Guatemala City.

“This investment will result in better highways, rural roads, ports and airports, water and environmental sewerage programs, electrification and even for the purchase of trains and wagons that will bring the first Guatemala City metro line to life,” he was quoted as saying.

The president added that 46.5bn quetzales will be earmarked for social programs and social infrastructure.

“This year we expect to refurbish 10,000 educational centers across the country. By next year we will have 60% of the total number of schools refurbished,” he said.

This is the first budget proposal presented by Arévalo’s government after it assumed power in January.
