Guatemala planning power supply calls

Bidding processes to procure electricity in Guatemala are in the pipeline as part of efforts to guarantee supply.

The energy and mines ministry’s announcement comes after an update by minister Víctor Hugo Ventura Ruiz of the power grid’s emergency.

“We believe that we’re passing this crisis, the severe drought that caused blackouts in other countries. In Guatemala, fortunately, we’re doing well,” a ministry release quoted Ventura as saying.

He added that a decision would be made in the coming days if the emergency - declared in March - would be maintained.

One call would be for dispatch in the next 24-36 months, and a second for the medium and long term. Power regulator CNEE and wholesale market administrator AMM participants must discuss details.

Meanwhile, CNEE authorized the temporary purchase by power distributors Deorsa and Deocsa, known collectively as Energuate, of up 34.8MW, and up to 21MW by distributor EEGSA.

The purchases aim to cover shortfalls in recent supply calls and the approvals run through July 1 or until new processes are launched.

There were no winners in Energuate’s tender as offers exceeded price caps while Energías San José picked up a contract in EEGSA’s call. These processes were for supply from May 1 this year to April 30, 2026.
