Guyana mulls additional gas-fired power capacity amid dispatch shortfall

Guyana’s government is evaluating the possibility of a second natural gas-fired power plant, according to President Irfaan Ali.

The head of state made the comment during a speech to address power disruptions. The current 300MW gas-fired plant under development is due online in 2025.

He blamed past administrations on alleged lack of investment to maintain and expand generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. “There is no redundancy in the system,” Ali said.

“In recent years electricity demand has increased exponentially, increasing from 126MW in 2020 to 184MW to date,” said the president, pointing to the country’s economic growth led by the oil and gas sector.

“We will also need additional power. That is clear. Based on the type of growth and the demand we are seeing,” added Ali, who highlighted efforts underway to shore up the grid and that talks are underway with UK Export Finance for new transmission lines.

In a separate speech, finance minister Ashni Singh said that Guyana Power & Light’s (GPL) customer numbers rose by 49,000 in 2023 to 227,067, and that over 40MW have been added in the last three years, with an additional 30MW expected to come from 17 units procured by GPL.

Another issue raised by Ali was the lack of technical capability at GPL, but that Cuba has offered to send technicians to support the utility.

Meanwhile, a vessel with capacity of 36MW is due to arrive in Guyana from Cuba in the coming weeks under a 24-month agreement with Qatari company UCC.

Regarding the 165MW Amaila Falls hydro project, evaluation of prequalification documents submitted in January continues.
