Guyana opens prequalification for 165MW hydro project

Guyana’s government has issued the previously announced request for proposals (RFP) to develop the 165MW Amaila Falls hydro project.

Prequalification documents for the build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) contract are due by November 28 and a final RFP will be published by January 31, with formal RFP submission due 45 days later.

The project includes a 23km2 reservoir and associated 230kV transmission line and substations.

Amaila will be integrated into the national grid and fall under the control and operation of Guyana Power and Light’s control center.

China Railway landed the project in 2021 but the deal fell through when the group requested switching the BOOT contract to an EPC one.

To cover growing demand, the government is also advancing the 300MW natural gas-to-energy project penciled in to come online in 2025, with potential to reach over 700MW.

The Amaila RFP is available in the Documents box in the top right corner.
