Bnamericas

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the EU have promised nearly US$100mn in funds for water, electric and sanitation projects in Guyana.

An IDB loan of US$16.8mn and a grant of US$14.8mn from the EU's Caribbean Investment Fund will go to projects to improve access to drinking water and sanitation services, according to an IDB release.

Funds will be used to build, upgrade and expand water treatment plants, increase access to sanitation and improve water pressure, water accountability, and household access to drinking water and sanitation.

Another IDB loan of US$37.6mn and a US$26.9mn EU grant will be used to improve Guyana's power system.

The funds will help restore 830km of distribution lines in the local utility network, increase the power system's operational efficiency and improve the management and performance of the state-owned utility Guyana Power and Light.
