HIF Global and Airbus sign collaboration agreement to develop synthetic fuels for aviation

HIF Global announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Airbus to advance the global development of e-Fuels for aviation, known as e- SAF (e-Sustainable Aviation Fuels). The MoU establishes a framework for the negotiation of definitive agreements in four areas of work: technical aspects, project development, commercial and promotion.

The collaboration was signed at the Farnborough Air Show (England), one of the most prestigious fairs in the aerospace, aviation and defense industry.

“The International Energy Agency projects that aviation activity will double from 2022 levels by 2030. Therefore, we are in a global race to supply and expand sustainable fuels for aviation, the transport sector where it is more difficult to decarbonize. e-SAF is a type of sustainable aviation fuel that is made by combining recycled CO₂ and green hydrogen produced with renewable energy. This fuel can be used directly in existing aircraft without making modifications to their engines. HIF Global is designing e-SAF production plants based on the synthesis of methanol to jet fuel, also called MtJ (methanol to jet).

In May 2023, HIF Global announced agreements with Johnson Matthey and Honeywell UOP to develop preliminary engineering for the company's first sustainable aviation fuel plant in the United States.
