Higher court order could add to Brazil fiscal pressure
The higher Brazilian court known as the superior court has issued an order that could add pressure to the country's already complicated fiscal situation.
The court ordered the federal government to increase monthly pensions by 25% for all elderly persons who need help from third parties due to poor health conditions.
The government can appeal the order.
In the first half of this year, Brazil's pension system posted a deficit of 90.8bn reais (US$22.7bn), up nearly 10% from a year ago.
The current administration tried hard but failed this year to secure congressional approval for a sweeping pension reform aimed at restoring the long-term health of public finances. The reform proposals are highly unpopular with the general public and many lawmakers were not willing to back them before the general elections in October.
