Hispasat and Intelsat extend their strategic agreement to provide internet connection on planes
This is a machine translation of the original press release issued in Spanish
Hispasat and Intelsat, a leading global provider of broadband connectivity products and services for aviation, have reached an agreement to expand and extend the capacity of the Amazonas Nexus that was contracted in 2019. Specifically, this new alliance includes all available capacity of the satellite over the United States and Brazil, as well as part of the capacity of the Amazonas Nexus over the North Atlantic corridor. As a result, Intelsat will offer in-flight Internet connection services in these high-traffic areas, as well as corporate and cellular network extension services.
Adam Troy, Vice President of Network Partnerships at Intelsat, stated that "our long and successful collaboration with Hispasat in the provision of services on commercial flights, together with the excellent coverage and flexibility in orbit of the Amazonas Nexus, has led us to sign this agreement that strategically reinforces our offer in the American and Brazilian commercial aviation market, as well as in mobility and network markets”.
Ignacio Sanchis, commercial director of Hispasat, thanked Intelsat for the confidence that “this long-term agreement represents. With it, the commitment we made with the Amazon Nexus for Internet connection in mobile environments is endorsed and strengthens our position in the American continent”.
Amazonas Nexus is a high-performance satellite with innovative features that will replace Amazonas 2 in the 61º West orbital position. The new satellite, which was launched on February 6 from Cape Canaveral, will have a payload specially dedicated to providing Internet connection in mobility environments (planes and ships). In addition to other applications, such as corporate communications or the deployment of cellular networks. It will also ship a state-of-the-art Transparent Digital Processor. This is a technological innovation that will substantially increase the flexibility of the satellite and will facilitate its adaptation to changes that may occur in demand during its useful life.
Along with this long-term agreement, which has been extended with Intelsat, the Amazonas Nexus project has two other strategic clients. Tusass, the Greenlandic telecommunications operator, and Artel, which will provide the Pathfinder 2 payload to the US Space Force. Overall, Hispasat has reached commercial agreements that represent more than 60% of contracted capacity in this new satellite. This is a remarkable milestone in a sector where short-term agreements predominate. This highlights the growth in demand for mobile and corporate satellite services in the Americas. In fact, it is expected that in the period 2021-2031, the demand for capacity for air connectivity services will multiply by twelve, according to Euroconsult 2022.
