Hispasat starts satellite tele-education pilot in Panama
Hispasat announced a pilot project for satellite tele-education in remote areas of Panama.
The pilot is being developed in the Plan de Chorcha educational facility, Ngäbe-Buglé region, where nearly 400 students are educated.
The system allows the education ministry to send and store content locally. It also includes Wi-Fi connectivity in the facility’s surrounding area, benefiting the community.
According to an IDB report, only 27.3% of rural households in Panama have internet access.
The pilot involves two technological classrooms – laptops, tablets, charging devices, interactive screens and classroom management software – as well as training for teachers in handling these tools.
At the end of last year, Hispasat developed similar projects in Ecuador’s Carchi, Orellana, Morona Santiago, and Napo provinces. Hispasat also developed a telemedicine project in Ecuador.
Satellite connectivity is preferred in rural areas because it offers extensive coverage.
