A consortium led by Dutch company Netherlands Airport Consultants (NAICM) won a 1.25bn-peso (US$86mn) contract to build runways and platforms and supply navigation equipment, among others, for the new international airport in Mexico City.

Airport group GACM reported that the consortium, which also includes Mexico's Sacmag and construction firm TADCO, presented the best technical proposal and the lowest cost.

Parsons International acted as technical advisor and evaluated the proposals from four consortiums.

NAICM has participated in the planning and design of over 500 airports worldwide, while the two Mexican companies have over 25 years of experience in engineering, management and supervision of infrastructure projects.

The contact is the first major one to be awarded for the construction of the new airport, which is estimated to need US$12.5bn.

According to the plans of the communications and transport ministry (SCT), tenders for the construction of the new airport buildings will be published in the coming weeks.

The first phase of construction includes a new terminal, control tower, 95 gates and three runways with capacity to handle up to 50mn passengers a year.

When completely ready, the new airport will have six runways and capacity of 120mn passengers a year.

BNamericas will host the 4th Mexico Infrastructure Summit on February 18-19 in Mexico City. More information is available here.
