Honduran congress mulls construction of penitentiary hospital

The Honduran congress is mulling the construction of a penitentiary hospital due to security concerns about caring for inmates at public health facilities.

Congressman and former health minister José Manuel Matheu recently presented a bill with the purpose of building such a facility.

“We must have a hospital that’s specialized for this population… they cannot continue to arrive with 20 guards [to public hospitals] where there have been attempts to free them and there have been deaths at the hospitals when they receive medical treatment,” El Tiempo reported Matheu as saying.

Matheu left the government at the beginning of this year and has since published accounts of irregularities and corruption cases he claims to have witnessed as head of the health ministry. He was replaced by Carla Paredes.

The government is also moving closer to starting construction of a prison complex in the Cisne Islands 200km from the mainland, with the tender expected to be launched in May or June.
