Honduran mayor injured while inspecting construction of controversial dam
The mayor of Honduras’ Central district, Jorge Aldana, and a journalist were injured in an explosion while the official was visiting the construction site of the controversial San José dam.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when Aldana was inspecting detonations in mountains in the Azacualpa area to allow construction to continue.
According to a video broadcast by TV Azteca Guate, an explosion sent piles of rock into the air, some of which hit the mayor on his back.
The circumstances surrounding the explosion are not clear and the authorities are expected to carry out an investigation into the incident, TV Azteca Guate reported.
The dam, which is expected to be finished in 2025, has been at the center of numerous disputes after its contract was awarded to Hidalgo e Hidalgo in 2020.
Construction began in 2021, but the contract was reviewed after NGOs and local media reported that the company was facing legal issues in Panama over accusations of paying bribes to the economy ministry. An amended contract was approved in February last year.
Other issues affecting the project include right-of-way problems, which halted construction in 2022 when landowners blocked access to areas after claiming they had not been compensated.
