Honduras capital seeks JICA, IDB funding for waterworks

The authorities of Honduras' central district, which is home to the country's capital Tegucigalpa, met representatives from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to present a portfolio of waterworks projects in need of funding.

The portfolio includes four 'high priority' projects to supply potable water to residents of the central district suffering from water shortages, according to local news outlet Radio HRN.

One of the projects calls for the construction of a dam on the Jiniguare river and another involves performing additional works on an existing water purification plant.

The communities that would be benefitted by the projects include Pespire, San Antonio de Flores, Choluteca, Nacaome, San Lorenzo and Valle.

The design studies for the projects are progressing and will be complete by April of next year, Ricardo Velásquez, head of the district's water utility Ugasam, was reported as saying by Radio HRN.

According to Velásquez, the projects require an estimated investment of US$160mn, which would come from JICA's Central America regional funds if the agency agrees to finance them.

This year, various important projects were carried out in Tegucigalpa with JICA financing, such as the construction of two hydroelectric plants at the El Picacho and La Concepción dams.
