Honduras mining exports slump

Honduras' mining exports were worth US$171mn in 2015, down from US$270mn the previous year.

Exports were impacted by a slump in iron ore production to US$200,000 from US$51.6mn, because of a suspension of mining activities for construction of a new processing plant, according to a central bank report.

Gold exports fell to US$96.9mn from US$112mn, with silver at US$16.3mn, down from US$32.4mn.

Zinc and lead exports were worth US$21.6mn and US$10.1mn, respectively, down from US$27.1mn and US$20.0mn

In the manufacturing sector, iron and steel exports were US$152mn, down from US$196mn. All metals exports were impacted by lower volumes and prices.

DECEMBER

Mining exports were worth US$13.3mn in December, down from US$32.5mn in the prior-year month, with gold at US$5.9mn, down from US$9.4mn, silver at US$2.7mn, down from US$8.5mn, zinc at US$1.9mn, down from US$5.5m, and lead at US$2.1mn, down from US$6.6mn.

Iron oxide exports were zero, down from US$1.5mn, with iron and steel at US$8.9mn, down from US$11.5mn.

Mining exports were up from US$10.1mn in November, with iron and steel down from US$11.3mn.

Aura Minerals is Honduras' main gold producer, with the San Andrés mine. Five Star Mining operates the Monte Redondo iron ore mine.
