Honduras opens energy storage consultation

Honduras’ power regulator CREE is accepting comments for proposed regulatory changes related to energy storage systems.

“The integration of energy storage systems (SAE) in the national electrical system represents a key strategy to increase the stability, efficiency and sustainability of the electricity supply in Honduras,” according to the watchdog.

CREE highlights the growing contribution of intermittent renewable sources and the need to identify possible barriers and shortfalls to incorporate the technology.

The recommended modifications to the regulation of the framework power industry law cover definitions, costs, firm capacity and dispatch scheduling, among others, and are available in the Documents box in the top-right corner of the screen.

Consultation runs through August 7 and observations may be submitted at https://www.consultapublica.cree.gob.hn/Account/LoginConsultaPublica with additional information available by writing to consultapublica@cree.gob.hn

In recent days, CREE launched tenders to conduct power generation and transmission cost studies, which will look at different technologies, including storage.

And earlier this year, Honduras’ energy department received a delegation of EU officials including European Investment Bank representatives to review projects for possible financing, such as battery energy storage systems.

Meanwhile, CREE issued calls to design, develop and implement a regulatory management platform, and draft norms to be incorporated in the regulation of measurement of regulated users.
