Honduras power generation expansion to cost at least US$2.62bn

Estimated investment to expand Honduras’ power generation park stands at between US$2.62bn and US$3.06bn, according to the national dispatch center (CND).

The forecast spend is part of CND’s proposed 2024-33 indicative generation expansion plan, which looks at six scenarios.

The base case, investment for which is projected at US$2.75bn, envisions the addition of 1,682MW thermo, 1,503MW renewables and 100MW storage.

The bulk of thermo would come from combined cycle gas turbine (1GW), while renewables would be led by solar with 660MW, followed by hydro with 473MW and wind 370MW.

“It is estimated that the annual energy contribution from renewable resources achieves significant indices during the study horizon, being able to reach values higher than 70% from the year 2029,” the roadmap highlights.

CND said that the system does not guarantee supply in the long term with the current firm capacity, with load demand and energy consumption in 2035 forecast to reach 2,978MW and 18,409GWh, respectively, up from this year’s expected 1,871MW and 11,571GWh.

The plan, along with annexes and a presentation, are available in the Documents box in the upper right corner.
