Honduras sets energy resource terms for 1,500MW supply call

Renewables will account for at least 65% of supply to be awarded in Honduras’ 1,500MW call, according to energy secretary and head of state power company Enee, Erick Tejada.

The official made the comment during an update, where he said that non-renewables will be limited to 35%.

He added that the expectation is that power regulator CREE will approve reference terms in the coming days, after which bidding rules would be finalized to launch the reverse auction process.

The goal is for 800MW to come online in 2027, 400MW the following year and 300MW in 2029.

Tejada highlighted that as part of immediate and short-term actions to cover demand, around 30MW are due online shortly to complete a push that began last year to add nearly 300MW, across eight areas in the country.

Other efforts include planned tenders to rent generation capacity and for battery storage, with 250MW (150MW rental, 100MW storage) envisioned for next year and 200MW (100MW solar, 100MW storage) in 2026.

In addition, Tejada called on CREE to approve reference terms to begin procurement for the 150km El Sitio-Terreno Blanco transmission line, which he said is needed to dispatch output from the new capacity starting in 2027.
