Honduras to invest in airport improvements

The Honduran government, through its new national airport service SAN, announced it will spend US$23mn to upgrade various airports.

SAN’s head Ricardo Martínez was quoted by newspaper Tiempo as saying the funds will be used to refurbish airports that were left in a poor state by previous administrations.

Among the works included in the budget are expanding the terminals at Ramón Villeda Morales airport and improving the asphalt at Juan Manuel Gálvez airport, the report said.

SAN was created in April to replace previous airport services authority EHISA, and is meant to launch construction tenders and oversee private companies that the government contracts for airport management.

Local media reported that work on Ramón Villeda Morales is set to start in the third quarter.

The airport, which was opened more than five decades ago, serves the San Pedro Sula area and north of the country. It was designed to handle 400,000 passengers a year but is currently used by 1.2mn, according to La Prensa.

SAN manages Golosón airport in La Ceiba, Juan Manuel Gálvez in Roatán, Ramón Villeda Morales and Toncontín in Tegucigalpa.
