In its "World Energy Investment Outlook", the agency said most of the new investments will be in generation and distribution to keep up with forecast rise in demand of 3.2% annually. Brazil will have to invest US$175bn in distribution and generation, and about US$155bn in generation in the electric power sector, "Insufficient investment in the electric power generation and transmission networks was the one of the main causes in the 2001 crisis and will be one of the biggest challenges over the next 30 years," the agency's report said.
