ICE finalizes signing of commitment letters for renewable projects in Guanacaste
This ICE statement was translated from Spanish by an automated system
The Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE) signed the commitment letters for the five solar projects and the four wind farms that will be built in Guanacaste, and that will contribute 166 megawatts of installed capacity to the national generation matrix ( see box ). Their start of operation is projected for 2026 and 2027.
The signing – under Law 7200 – is part of the actions promoted by the Institute to guarantee the satisfaction of the country's electricity demand. The greater participation of these variable sources will be joined by other firm energy projects (geothermal and hydroelectric), which will be integrated throughout the present decade.
As reported in April and June, the awards are the result of the selection processes of calls No. 04-2023 and No. 05-2023 . These were pending formalization with the letter of commitment, a legal requirement for contracts, in accordance with the model included in the Terms of Reference.
“We are pleased to announce the progress of these clean generation projects by the private sector. They will join the repowering of Tejona in Tilarán and our new San Antonio solar plant in La Uruca. We will have better forecasts for phenomena such as El Niño,” said Verny Rojas, Electricity Manager at ICE.
Among the requirements to sign the contracts and begin construction, companies must have the acceptance of the Feasibility Report (issued by ICE), the Environmental Feasibility Declaration (from SETENA), the Public Generation Services Concession (issued by ARESEP) and the connection contract.
