América Móvil's Claro aims for 4G leadership in Brazil
América Móvil's Claro Brasil wants to be the 4G leader in Brazil and to have, by the end of this year, 9,000 antennas ready to deliver 4.5G technology, CEO Paulo César Teixeira (pictured) told reporters in São Paulo before the opening of the 2017 Futurecom conference.
With 4.5G, América Móvil adds other technologies to the LTE network to deliver connections 10 times faster than traditional 4G.
The company is the market leader in fixed broadband and in pay TV. In mobile telephony, Telefónica's Vivo has the most users (30.7% of the market) while Claro in August displaced TIMfrom second spot with a 25% share (compared to 24.9% for TIM). Claro has over 60mn mobile clients in Brazil.
Apart from launching 4.5G, the company's plan to take top spot involves selling quad-play packages combining pay TV, broadband, fixed telephony and mobile telephony,
Claro plans to make 4.5G available to 11 cities by the end of the year. The first markets to receive it are: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Vitória, Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Curitiba, Salvador, São Luís, Campinas and Brasilia.
The operator expects to have all its 18,500 Brazilian antennas ready for 4.5G by the end of 2018.
In Mexico, América Móvil also plans to launch 4.5G by the end of this year.
Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ and the Moto Z² Force are the phones currently available in Brazil that are compatible with the 4.5G technology.
By the end of the year, other devices supporting 4.5G and its technical requirements should be launched, according to the company.
