IDB awards solid waste management grant for Haiti
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$33.5mn grant to finance a comprehensive solid waste management program in Haiti.
The five-year program will improve the management, handling, and disposal of solid waste in the departments of Cap-Haitien, Limonade, and Quartier Morin, in the island's northern area.
Under the program, a solid waste management center will be built in the locality of Mouchinette to host a landfill and facilities for recycling and composting. The landfill will be developed under a public-private partnership model, which the IDB will structure.
The grant will also finance waste collection trucks.
By the end of the progam, some 130,000t of waste are expected to have been processed, 9,000t of which will have been treated into compost and 1,800t recycled for reuse.
French development agency AFD will provide US$2.36mn for the program, while the national government will earmark another US$1.3mn.
