IDB greenlights US$133mn to improve water supply

IDB has approved a US$133mn loan to improve water supply in Jamaica's Kingston metropolitan area. The loan will be used to help improve the efficiency, quality and sustainability of potable water services in the area and increase access to water in other urban centers nationwide, the bank said in a release. The program will also aim to optimize water infrastructure performance, reduce non-revenue water levels, and strengthen the National Water Commission ( NWC), which is in charge of the initiative. Work will involve completing projects in selected water treatment and production facilities, reducing commercial and physical water losses, implementing customer water meters and leak detection equipment, and repairs. IDB also approved a US$22mn loan to help Jamaica enhance its energy efficiency and conservation potential.
