IDB set to award US$250mn for Guatemala

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) could approve some US$250mn for health and road infrastructure projects in Guatemala in the first quarter of this year, government publication Diario de Centro América reported.

Some US$150m of the amount will be used for road projects, Carlos Melo, the bank's representative in Guatemala told the daily.

The other US$100mn will be used to strengthen the national hospital network, particularly facilities specialized in maternity care.

Except for a project in Quiché department, the IDB has not financed roadworks in Guatemala in the past few years, Melo said.

The government is currently reviewing a US$193mn loan that the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Cabei) approved for the country last month. The funds will finance an investment program for hospital infrastructure and equipment, which will be managed by the health ministry.
