Improved port infrastructure announced for green hydrogen and tourism projects in Magallanes, Chile
PRESS RELEASE from Corfo
14 June, 2024
Over USD 40 million will be invested in upgrading harbour infrastructure in Magallanes to enhance productive capacity and foster the development of new industries in the Southern Region of Chile.
The funds will be provided by the Regional Government to the Austral Port Company (EPA) to boost tourism activity, connectivity, and, above all, logistics at the docks, in light of the increase in cargo and supply services to planned green hydrogen projects in the area.
Ana María Ruz, executive director of Corfo’s Green Hydrogen Committee, said that this initiative is a “powerful signal” to enable shared infrastructure and thus “contribute with concrete actions to the development of the region, particularly for H2V investors and other industries facing urgent challenges in this area.”
This week, the Magallanes Regional Council approved the project “Improvement of the Port System to Promote the Development of Magallanes,” with a plan projected up to 2028.
This plan will allow for the acquisition of port cranes for EPA's Mardones terminal and the reinforcement of the dock's slab to increase the operational capacity of large-scale equipment, hereby significantly improving cargo transfer efficiency as required by the H2V industry.
