In 17 days, Recope enables two bunker tanks to support ICE with power generation
The following is a machine translation of a Recope release
Recope continues to work on generating efficiencies for the country and guaranteeing energy backup. After 17 days of hard work, two bunker storage tanks were opened. One of them had been abandoned for more than 50 years and the other had several pending tasks for three administrations.
These tanks are intended to meet the demand that ICE has registered in recent years and also to anticipate possible future increases in the consumption of this fuel, used to produce electricity.
Each tank has a capacity of 100,000 barrels, which represents an increase of 70.6% in the total storage capacity of that product.
“ These tanks are intended to guarantee a more timely supply of bunker to ICE, a key fuel for the production of electricity in the country. This is a reflection of the fact that Recope has all the capacity to continue guaranteeing the country the necessary energy security, just as we have done uninterruptedly for more than 61 years ,” explained Karla Montero, president of Recope.
Recope is a strategic ally of ICE and continues to demonstrate this through its actions.
“ Both state-owned companies guarantee the energy security of this country. We celebrate the fact that Recope is expanding its bunker storage capacity to generate electricity in the country, with this we will be able to have more inventory in case it is needed in the short term ,” said Marco Acuña, president of ICE.
The installation of the two tanks at the Moín terminal in Limón required an investment of almost $2.1 million, while building them from scratch would have meant an additional $37.9 million.
“ We are not only increasing storage capacity much faster, but also at a lower cost. This is another example of efficiency and of Recope's actions to position itself as a model company within the public sector ,” said Montero.
To enable these structures, it was necessary to install valves, pipes, foam chambers and lightning rod towers, replace sheets, as well as clean the tank internally.
