IN BRIEF: Caribbean braces for tropical storm Erika
Tropical storm Erika is strengthening and is expected to reach the Leeward Islands Thursday morning, the US National Hurricane Center is reporting.
Erika, currently just off South America's Atlantic coast, is estimated to bring maximum sustained winds of 75kph along a path that is forecast to curve northwestward through the Caribbean.
Erika and its precipitation are expected to reach Puerto Rico – in the midst of a drought – by early Friday morning and continue northward along the Atlantic coasts of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, possibly reaching as far as the Bahamas and southern US, depending on how much of the storm's strength is dissipated over Caribbean land masses.
